Areas of Expertise: Biology, Geology, Ecology, Global Warming, and anything else you are interested in, student;
we can learn together!
Project Ideas: My park, Mt. Mitchell, has been heavily affected by logging, air pollution, invasive tree-killing
bugs, and currently global warming so all of these would be especially good projects on which
you could work with me.
Other Comments: Students from Yancey County, McDowell County, Buncombe County, Asheville City, and
Haywood County high schools are all welcome to contact me about projects. If you live
somewhere else, let me know where it is and I'll determine whether or not I'd be able to semi-
regularly get out to your neck of the woods. Meeting at Mt Mitchell State Park off Highway 128
and the Blue Ridge Parkway is always an option as well. ~Matt

Areas of Expertise: stormwater runoff, raingardens, created wetlands, rainbarrels, stream bank stabilization
Project Ideas: 1) Identify an eroding streambank and convince the landowner to work with Henderson Co.
Cooperative Extension to have it fixed under our Stream Dr. Program; then work with a
landscape professional under that program to help do the work. 2) Identify a location for a
raingarden and plan, design, and install it, with mentoring from Henderson Co. Extension.
Several scouts have done similar projects for Gold Star awards.
Other Comments: Students from Henderson, Transylvania, Buncombe, Madison, and Haywood counties are
welcome, but PROJECTS need to take place in Henderson Co. However, I may be able to
refer a student in other counties to another Extension agent if they have a good project idea.

Areas of Expertise: Fisheries management and coastal habitat protection are my main areas of work, however my formal training is marine and estuarine ecology, w/a focus on invertebrate species. I previously worked for a conservation organization (10 years) and continue to do so through volunteer efforts with a variety of organizations.
Project Ideas: No specific ideas, but I believe that there is certainly room for projects w/a focus on water conservation and stormwater management.
