Areas of Expertise: Primarily I'm into ecology: the BIG picture and how people can learn to do right by the environment without compromising their comfort. I'm also an outdoor person; I SCUBA dive, garden, spend a lot of time on the water, and I'm trying to further my own education in wetlands and environmental law.
Other Comments: I'm a history major with a marine science background; I also have criminal justice and emergency management experience. I have a lot of contacts in 3 different state offices so I might have some unusual resources to offer. Also I am quite outgoing and I would like to see someone do a really cool, unique project about the environment (or anything really for that matter! :)

Areas of Expertise: As a grant writer, I work with many local industries (and national industries) to research data for grants.  I have contacts in many of the fields - Transportation (NCDOT, etc); Hazardous Materials/Waste (I am VERY familiar with this issue - the hazards are great, and affect many sectors of the population); Creative Arts (am an avid participant in local theatre, and have worked with many other non-profit arts-related organizations); and Population issues (I work daily on census.gov and with local departments that handle population issues - planning/zoning, etc.).
Project Ideas: Issues surounding illegal dumping and illegal trash dumps.
Other Comments: As a grant writer, I write often and about varied subjects.  I mentored a HS senior in 2008 on his project involving Dairy Farming in the US.  I assisted in editing, making comments to help develop his project and ideas, and assist on all drafts (editing).  This was not a subject I would have considered myself particularly insightful, but I was able to be a sounding-board for the student.  Taught him how the index card system works (something his teacher had not done), and provided tips from a writer's standpoint.  As a public speaker and conference educator, I was able to give him pointers on presenting in front of the panel, as well.

Areas of Expertise: My work is with small terrestrial mammals (mice, shrews, voles) and bats.  The work I do includes systematics studies, biogeography, and a little with toxicology and bats.  Monitoring projects would include periodic live trapping of small mammals at a particular site.
Project Ideas: Access to the scientific research collection that I curate would permit a student an opportunity to conduct a study on the change in species composition of a particular area over time (biodiversity study).  This would primarily be a collections based study (can explain what this means and would entail), with supplemental field surveys as necessary.
Other Comments: Because of the nature of the field work I do, students would need to have pre-exposure rabies and current tetanus shots in order to handle live mammals.  I would be willing to work with a teacher to help establish a mammal related research project appropriate for a high school student.    I would love the opportunity to work with students interested in my line of work.  It is fun and challenging, and for the most part, not something that the general public is aware of.

Areas of Expertise: Biology, Geology, Ecology, Global Warming, and anything else you are interested in, student; we can learn together!
Project Ideas: My park, Mt. Mitchell, has been heavily affected by logging, air pollution, invasive tree-killing bugs, and currently global warming so all of these would be especially good projects on which you could work with me.
Other Comments: Students from Yancey County, McDowell County, Buncombe County, Asheville City, and Haywood County high schools are all welcome to contact me about projects. If you live somewhere else, let me know where it is and I'll determine whether or not I'd be able to semi-regularly get out to your neck of the woods. Meeting at Mt Mitchell State Park off Highway 128 and the Blue Ridge Parkway is always an option as well. ~Matt
