Stokes asterStokes Aster

Scientific Name: Stokesia sp./Asteraceae

Native

Evergreen Perennial, Zone 5-9/1’ to 1-1/2’ tall, dense, rosette-forming habit.  Easily grown, rewarding to even the most negligent gardener. Stokes Aster is the perfect low,
front of the garden plant, grown for its strappy, evergreen foliage and frilly flowers in a variety of colors. This native is long lasting as a cut flower, and its early season bloom provides nectar for spring butterflies.

Full Sun to Partial Sun. The soil needs to be well amended for drainage. Stokes Asters dislike heavy, wet soils, rotting as a result. Drought tolerant. To prolong flowering, deadhead the faded flowers. To encourage a flowering cycle, cut the entire flower stalk back at the base of the plant after they finish flowering. This will occasionally work. Divide the clumps every couple of years in the spring to prevent overcrowding and diminished flowering.
