Eastern Red Cedar

Scientific Name: Juniperus virginiana L./ Juniperaceae Native

Height 20-50 ft; 1-2 ft. in diameter

Eastern Red Cedar is found in all classes and conditions of soil – from acidic wetlands to dry, rocky ridges. It seems to thrive on barren soils where few other trees are found. Eastern Red Cedar is scattered throughout the state, but is most common in the Piedmont. Red Cedar berries are eaten by some wintering birds, particularly Cedar Waxwings and Yellow-rumped Warbler. The foliage is the sole host plant for the diminuitive yet beautiful Juniper Hairstreak butterfly.
