Redbud tree in bloomRedbud Tree

Scientific Name: Cercis canadensis L./ Fabaceae Native

Height 15-30 feet; 6-10 in diameter

The Redbud, sometimes called Judas tree from its oriental relative of that name, is an understory tree that is found across the state. Its early spring blossoms attract many of the season’s first emerging butterflies including Tiger Swallowtail, Spring Azure and Juvenals’ Duskywing. The leaves of the red bud are heart shaped and turn to a bright clear yellow in autumn.
