Flowering Dogwood

Scientific Name: Cornus florida

Native

Height 10-20 ft.; 4-6 inches diameter

Flowering dogwood is named and admired for the white drifts of flowers it adds to the woodlands in early spring. It grows throughout the state, usually under the larger forest trees. Dogwood has the distinction of being the state flower. The bright red fruit is an important food for many migrant birds in fall, particularly thrushes, bluebirds and robins.
