Butterfly Bush

Scientific Name: Buddleia davidii/Loganiaceae

Not Native
Deciduous, Perennial Shrub, Zone 5-10/Height varies with variety

The clusters of fragrant though small tubular flowers are a magnet to many nectar-feeding insects and hummingbirds. This is one of the best all-purpose plantings to attract a diversity of butterflies; however, there is some concern that the species may become invasive. Likes Full Sun, Well amended, well drained soil. Drought tolerant, but dry weather will affect flowering. Prune frequently during the growing period for good structural development and height control, as well as to keep the flowering vigorous. Wait until early spring to prune hard, within 1’-2’ of the ground. This will encourage strong stem growth and new growth at the base. At this time you may be able to cut out the older, weaker woody stalks, if the plant has developed new shoots. (Photo: Environmental Education Garden, June 2001)
