Scientific Name:  Monarda didyma/Lamiaceae

Native

Herbaceous Perennial, Zone 4/Height Varies.

The “fringed” flowers are actually clusters of long, tubular flowers.  The bluish-green foliage was once used as ‘Liberty Tea’.  It has mild mint fragrance that is said to have a soothing effect.  Attracts hummingbirds, bees and those butterflies that seek long tubular flowers including the Spicebush Swallowtail and Cloudless Sulphur.

Likes Full Sun to Partial sun,Well-amended, moist, well-drained soil.  Drier, sandier soils will diminish the plant’s performance, as will drought.  Being a member of the Mint Family, divide the plants on a yearly basis to prevent them from choking themselves out.  It’s good to place Monardas in area with good airflow.  This will keep the foliage drier and reduce the incidence of powdery mildew.
