BeautyberryBeautyberry

Scientific Name: Calicarpa/Verbenaceae

Native

Deciduous Perennial Shrub, Zone 6-8/Height varies with variety

A wonderful ornamental for a perennial border as a unique berried specimen, for the background it provides during the summer and the structure the stems provide in the winter.  The flowers attract some nectar-feeding insects during summer and the brightly-colored berries are a favorite with birds during the winter.

Full Sun to Partial Sun, Fertile, well-drained soil.  Not well adapted to being dry, so supplemental watering will be needed during dry summers.  Beautyberries flower and fruit on new wood so prune hard, within 1'-2' of the ground in the early spring like you would Butterfly Bushes.  Just don’t prune in the fall.
