Let’s talk about poop. No, really, let’s talk about poop. Does your family own a dog? Do you know other people with a dog? What do you think happens to all of the dog waste our pets leave behind? Pet waste left on the ground, especially near streets and sidewalks, gets washed into storm drains and drainage ditches which flow to the local waterway. This water, called runoff, does not get cleaned or treated along the way, so anything that goes into the storm drain or ditch goes into the water. Bacteria, parasites, and viruses found in pet waste can be harmful to water quality and human health.

When you think about how many people own dogs, the pollution can really build up. Don’t worry, nobody has to give up his or her pooch! Pet owners can improve water quality by picking up after their pets and throwing their pet’s waste into a trashcan.
The Office of Environmental Education has produced these pet waste pickup information postcards for distribution at vet clinics, animal shelters, and other sites. Just fill out the online form and they will be sent to you free of charge. Please indicate on the order form the vet clinic or shelter where they will be distributed, and whether you work there or are a patron. You may also request a print-ready version of the front of the postcard to use in your own publications by e-mailing rachel.golden "at" ncmail.net. We appreciate your order!
